Final Music Video for Becky Young

L3/13 - TIME (Alie & Phillippa) from cmdiploma on Vimeo.

Evaluation of Shots Used

1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals
This shot shows a link between the lyrics of the song and the video because the lyrics to the song are quite sad and very emotional and this shot so the pain she is feeling about what the song is describing and the link between the lyrics and her emotion.
2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented
This shot shows how a record company would want the artist to be represented, because she is a live performance artist and this shot shows her on stage with microphone, in a live performance.
3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre
This shot show the type of music genre that the music video is, this indicates that the music video is for an acoustic song, as it is a close-up of the artist playing an acoustic guitar.
4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference
This shot is an intertextual reference to a shot from the music video KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree (number 4 in the shots from other music videos shots)
This shot is a reference in the way that the shot from KT Tunstall and this shot are of a mirrored image of the artists face/mouth singing.
5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera
This shot shows the use of camera by showing one of the many different shot angles that we experimented and used in our footage for the music video. We used a lot of angles and this is a close-up of Becky playing the guitar from above.
6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting
This shows the use of lighting that we used in the music video because the lighting in our video was blue and white stage lighting, the lighting used in our video was the same type of lighting that would be used in a live performance, because it is a live performance video.
7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene
This is a shot that show some of the mise-en-scene in our video, this shows that the video is on a stage with lighting (live performance).
8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos
These shots show that we have watched other music videos to get references/influences from when making our music video, these are similar shots that me and Alie found in other music videos and that influenced our final video. (Number 8 and 9 from other music video shots)

Final Thoughts

Becky Young was a solo acoustic artist, who mostly performs live and she had commissioned us to make her a music video for one of her songs and also design a digipak for her album. We used these aspects about her, in the video. I tried to put this across in the music video by having it as a performance based video and it being just her and her guitar. I also tried to portray her as she is in real life, a regular teenage girl, dressed in regular clothes, just trying to make it as a solo artist.

I also used aspects of her music and song style in the ideas for the digi-pack. As most of the songs that she writes are based upon her; feelings, thoughts and her life. I made the digi-pack in the theme of a diary because a diary is usually where people display their feelings, thoughts and life. Also a notebook/diary seems the kind of place that a teenage singer would note down any lyrics or themes for songs. As the majority of her music is based upon her love life and her boyfriend we tried to portray the diary themed digi-pack as if it was her diary with pictures of her and her boyfriend. This is also helping to get across the way we tried to represent her in the music video, a normal teenage girl.

Overall I feel that through the proccess of making the music video and digi-pack, that we have definatly achieved what Becky wanted from all of this and it shows her the way that she wanted. This has been a good experience for us, we now have the experience with working for a client and what it will be like to produce something that someone can use.

Feedback from Godfrey Entertainment

I needed feedback from someone else, for the music video. Alie had a good idea to email the chief editor of Godfrey Entertainment as her dad works with him and send him the video to give feedback. Below is the email that he sent back to us, which included feedback from him.

"Hi Alie,

Nice job on the music video. Your Dad said you were interested in
feed back... There isn't a right way or a wrong way as I'm sure
you've learned in
your classes as art is subjective.

Were you limited to shooting in studio? Not allowed to mix in random
shots of your artist perhaps walking down a street?

I think you have to consider the type of song and that dictates the
style of the video. You did that. Your cut matched the pace of the
song. Creatively, you could have taken some of your shooting a
little further, for example, shooting close ups of a shoe or even a
shoe lace on the stool, ecu of the frets of the guitar, her eyes,
etc. I think more of that would have been interesting. Textures
(from filters during your edit) could have been also used to add some
depth. Grainy black and white. Perhaps an over exposed or blown
out look(hot). Maybe more rack focusing.

These aren't new ideas. There really aren't too many ways to
innovate as everything has been done and done again. It depends on
whether you're limited by budget, turn around time,
location, or class assignment.

It would be difficult to create for your many different angles, but I
really liked the shadows on her face as the video was fading to
black, about 4:03, where she was more back lit.

Keep up the good work!

Todd"

Facebook Feedback

We decided to put the video on Facebook to see if we could get some feedback from other people. However this didn't turn out how I wanted as we didn't get any feedback and no one decided to post a comment. Here is a screen grab of our video on Facebook. I was hoping that anyone who would watch it may leave a comment but I now know that we should use other methods of gathering feedback, such as, having a showing to a group of people.

Feedback From Becky Young Second Rough Cut

After producing the second rough cut of the music video for Becky Young I asked her what she thought of it and also showed her the feedback which we had received from the Junction. She said that she agreed with the feedback which the Junction and our teacher Nick had given us and she also thought that the footage within the car should be taken out and leave the live footage in.

This has helped to finalise our plans for the video and now that we have her feedback, we can continue editing to what she is wanting from the video.

Junction Feedback from Second Rough Cut

Yesterday we went to the Junction and along with them informing us about the Fiver that we are going to be involved in, they also watched our second drafts of the music video and gave us feedback.

The feedback which they gave us was very useful, it is similar to what Nick has advised us to do and it will help us to make our video a lot better.
They thought that the outside footage of video didn't work well with the live footage. However, they thought that in some way it could work but to take the time to find out how, would take a long time which we don't have. We have decided to get rid of the outside footage completely to make the video. We are going to keep the live footage and work with it visually in Final Cut so it will be more interesting and gripping.
The judges at the Junction also thought that when they were watching the video, they could imagine the artist laying in the coffin throughout the song. This was because of what the lyrics was talking about and we thought that this could work but the chances of us getting a coffin is low.

Editing Pictures

A few image of us editing after the second rough cut and making great progress. Have managed to get a bit of feedback from Becky Young and the Junction, which helped us to improve on the way.

Second Rough Cut

Here is our second rough cut of the video. We have come a long way since we started to edit the footage and we have received a lot of different but useful feedback. After this rough cut we have decided to get rid of all of the outside footage and the footage from inside the car. This was a common piece of feedback which we received and we are using it to an advantage.
This then leaves the live Junction footage, which we have been told is quite strong and will be able to stand by itself. I am currently editing the live footage and adding in different shots and transitions to make it more interesting

Behind the Scenes

Here are three videos from behind the scenes of one of the music video shoots. This shoot was at the Junction in Cambridge and they give you a small insight into what went on.

Thursday 22 October 2009

Junction Shoot

Today we had the shoot at the Junction and I think that is has gone really well and we were able to get a lot more footage than I thought we would. I took advantage of the space that we had and moved around the stage, getting many different angles of Becky. These varied from shots from the floor looking up at Becky, to over shoulder shots of Becky playing the guitar. Having a variety of shots will help us in the editing process as it will give us a lot more choice and we will have more to work with when cutting between shots.
We hadn't managed to make a detailed storyboard for this shoot, so we thought that this may make it more difficult when shooting but it allowed us to get a lot more footage and we experimenting a lot more which will help the video.
Myself and Alie went into the shoot with two cameras and this became an advantage as we were both able to go around the stage shooting at different angles, allowing us to get more footage in half the time. The only down side to this was that occasionally we would get in each others shot and this will need to be taken out when editing.

First Rough Cut Feedback from Becky Young

After uploading the rough cut of the music video, I asked Becky to have a look at it and I also asked her to comment on the video and tell me what she thought of it. She managed to give a lot of feedback and tell us what we should think about changing.
Becky thought overall it was a good idea, however, she thought that I could cut in down a lot more and the cuts could be a bit more quicker. She also thought that on some parts where she is just looking blank and not singing that I could shorten it and add in another shot to make it more interesting. Finally, she thought that when I add in the Junction half of the footage, I could add it on the end like I intended but also put in earlier on so that it is a bit more interesting and cuts between her journey and the Junction Gig.

Rough Cut

Here is our rough cut video of Becky's music video. I have managed to get some feedback from Becky and others after watching it, there are a lot of things which we need to change and edit.

Monday 19 October 2009

First Session of Editing

Here are a few pictures from the first and rough cut editing session we had. Alie took a few pictures while I was beginning the editing and tweaking it before the rough cut.

Wednesday 14 October 2009

Target Audience

Even though we are making this vide for a client, we still need to consider the target audience when making this video. I think the target audience for this video would be a females that are 17-18 years old. These girls will be in full time education and quite clever and determined to get good grades.

They would spend most of their free time; hanging out with mates, at local gigs (such as the junction or corn exchange), at starbucks, mostly with friends or working in a job they aren't interested in.

This target audience will most likely wear; converse, dirty jeans and band t-shirts.

Also they would probably play an instrument like guitar and they will spend most of their money on school supplies and coffee.

The audience that will buy her music will probably either buy it on iTunes or download it for free on things like BitTorrent as opposed to buying the cd in a store and they are probably already fans of Becky's music.

Images from First Shoot

Here are a few pictures of our first shoot and this shoot was held on Hills Road, Cavendish Avenue and outside the Junction

.

Friday 9 October 2009

First Shoot - Car

Today, Friday 9th, we began our shooting and we started off with the shots of the journey and shots within the car. We began our shoot with the car stationary so I could get some shots before the car started off. The first couple of shots where of here strumming in the guitar and holding chords on the threat board. Then went on to get a few most complex shots of the guitar and then we started the car, moved off and began to get shots of her singing and the scenery going past.
This part of the shoot was quite easy and quite. However, the camera was quite shakey, it was acceptable but not perfect and we had to use a lot of petrol as we were doing a lot of loops around Hills Road.
After completing the shots within the car, I then went on to shoot the artist coming out of the car at the Junction and a few shots of her going into the Junction. These shots were quite simple but we did have a security man come up to us and ask that were not to have an signs, people or number plates within our shots and we took this into account.

Dave's Website help

Dave has given us a link to a website may help us to make the effect that we wanted within our footage.
http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/basic_sky_replacement

This is a video that shows how to changed colours, for example, in skys and colours in the shot. This videos shows you how to complete this in After Effect but we are planning on using Final Cut but we shall watch it for help anyway.

Practise Footage - Effects

On Thursday 8th, in the morning, we went out on Hills Road to shoot some practise footage of our artist. We decided to do this because we wanted to add a colour effect to the footage and getting some practise footage would help use to know what we needed to do before it came to shooting the real thing.
When we brought the footage back to the editing room, we found out that the most easiest way to complete our colour effect would be to use After Effects. However, we felt more comfortable with Final Cut so we have played around with Final Cut effects and we have came up with a video with effects that we want to use now. Even though I used Final Cut, I am also willing try to learn how to complete it on After Effects so that I can compare them and see which is better.

Junction Talk

This afternoon, Thursday 8th, I went to the Junction to Simon, who is the technician, about what we are wanting for the shoot at the Junction.
Myself and Alie have told Simon that we shall need plain a stage, plain background and a stool set up for Becky Young to sit on. This will also mean that we will need a microphone for her so that it looks like a normal acoustic stage set up.
We also had to consider lighting, so we asked if we could have a simple lighting and Simon suggested white and blue and we thought that this would work well. Simon then said everything that we had suggested was fine and he just suggested the possibility of some coloured lighting to make her stand out a bit more.
Our shoot at the Junction should be on Thursday 22nd.

Ed Lovelace's Talk

Today Ed Lovelace, an ex student of Long Road, came in to talk to us about what his career and his time here at Long Road and getting into the media industry.

First of all he started by telling us about his time at Long Road. He was here from 2000 for two years and he completed a media course. As well as telling us of what he thought the course was like, he also showed us a couple videos which he has completed as part of the course. The first video was of a short thriller and it consisted of two guys who came into a house and stole a suitcase. This video was really good and it showed us that equipment doesn't make a film good, its the ideas and how you make it. While he was at long road, they were using cameras which weren't as good as ours and they were only just starting to use iMovie. We have better equipment than they had then and we are still producing the same standard of work.
He also showed us a music video which he had created for the course and it seemed quite complex, even though he had a simple idea. I think that comparing our video at the end with his music video, might be an interesting thing and to see whether we can create something as simple and as visually effective when making the video for Becky Young.

Ed then went on to tell us about what he did after Long Road and he told us that he went on to study at Bournemouth University. I found thisparticularly interesting as this is the university which I am thinking about going to and to know that he went there and managed to get into the media industry quite quickly. It makes you think that he went on the right path and that it may work for us.
He didn't tell us a lot about what he did at Bournemouth as he didn't have any videos to show us and it was hard for him to explain. However, he said that Bournemouth is a great university and he got a lot of chances there, such as, they would bring in people from the industry to teach them and also star in their productions. This included cast from Cold Feet to act in their productions and the director of Harry Potter to teach them.

Finally, he went on to talk about his videos which he has made in his career, they started with as little as a £100 budget, all the way to £40,000. The lowest budget video's which he showed us were of 'Cutting Pink With Knives and 'The Gallows'. The videos were really good considering they has such as low budget. Cutting Pink With Knives video was done within two hours and shot within a faked one shot in a basement. The Gallows video was a live video which wasshot with 8 cameras, with an hour or so of footage.

The bigger budget videos were of Cage the Elephant and these video's were fantastic. The first video were saw was of the band in a padded room and this room was made for £20,000 by an artist. The other video which we saw was of them in front of a projector and a variety of footage was being shown throughout. This was quite an effective video and it was a very simple idea and I was surprised it cost so much.

The final video which he showed us was a trailer of a film which he is currently making. He is working on making a film, almost like a documentary, which is set in America. It was about a guy who left home when he 14 and he has been on tour ever since playing in his band. He was called Viking Moses and the film follows him around America, also playing in people's houses. This is going to be an interesting film and it is a very original thing to document.

Budgeting

To complete this commission we won't really be spending much on producing it. However, if I were to be making this production within the real media industry, we would need to be paying for a lot of things which we are using. For example, HD camera, tripods, laptops, Final Cut editing software and headphones. We would also need to pay actors within the video, the costumes which they would be wearing and also hiring of using the stage within the Junction.
Our actors are willing to act without being paid, we are using the equipment and software from college, which will not cost anything and the Junction stage has been offered to us to use for free.
The only parts of the production which I think we will need to pay for is the transport to and from each set and getting the equipment. So this will include bus journeys from home to college and college to the Junction for all members of the cast. Finally, we will also need to pay for the petrol that we are going to be using for the car within the video.

Health and Safety for Shooting

Here is a list of things which we will have to be careful of or be aware of during our shoots.

Shooting in town -

- It will be quite busy in town and we will have to be aware of lots of people and this will include keeping equipment safe and trying not to get others in the shot.
- Inside the Junction we will have to consider a lot as we are shooting within a staging area. This will include wiring on floor which people can trip over, risk of damaging equipment and there will be a lot of electrical equipment to be aware of while shooting the artist.
- In town we will also have to be aware of traffic, as we are shooting roughly in the centre of town- it will be quite busy and risk of getting run over.

Shooting in Sawston and Field -

- Shooting within Sawston means we will have to consider roughly the same things as in town, traffic and not getting others within the shot.
- On the way to the field we have to cross a main road so there will be a risk again of getting run over so we will be using the situated crossing. There is also a train track crossing to get to the field and we will have to be very aware of this and use it properly.
- On the field there isn't a lot to take into account but there is a small river that runs round the field and we will have to be aware of people falling in and drowning. Also on the field we shall have to be careful of not going on someone else's property.

Animatic for Becky's Video

Here is an animatic which me and Alie have created. It shows you roughly about a minute of the beginning of the music and whats she want to create for the video. Completing this task also brought up the issue that we were a bit unsure about how we wanted to start the video and now we have spoken with Becky again and have a very detailed idea. This video makes it easier for us when we want to go out shooting because we know exactly what we need to shoot.

Wednesday 30 September 2009

Planning - Props and Costume

Props - we don't really need a lot of props. The props which we will be using are the possibility of getting a car to use for the shooting and Becky will also be bringing her acoustic guitar for most of the shoots.

Costume - we have worked out that to make the effect which we are trying to achieve, it would be easier if Becky were to where completely black and white and Becky has said that this would be a good idea. This will consist of black jeans, black and white shoes, white or black top and it also happened that her hair is black now so this will also be a plus for us. We will also be paling out her face a little bit because she sometimes gets red cheeks and any eye make up she has will be black.

I also have to take into account that we will have the chance to shoot at the Junction. When it comes to this we will need to have an idea of what sort of set up we will want at the Junction for her live performance. Becky has decided that she would want to be sat on the stool, centre stage so that she is centre of attention. We thought that two or three lights set on her would work and she wants basic colours, either white or a blue. As she will be on the stage with her guitar, we will also need a mic for her guitar as well as her singing so it look more realistic. This is pretty much the only set up that we requirer but we will go to the Junction feeling free for any suggestions to make it better.

Planning - Place

When it comes to places to shoot, it is quite simple. We have chosen a field to be in part of our video and we want to capture the journey there so I have decided to start the journey from town. So when it comes to shooting on the days which we can all be available, no day would be more convenient than the next as we need to get into town each time we shoot.

Because I plan to shoot in town and we have considered that there will be a lot of people, busy so risk of an accident and people won't want to be shot so we are trying to get hold of a car to shoot some of the journey in. This will give us a variety of shots and also help with the problem of shooting in town. This concept, of not shooting unaware people, will be taken in to account every where we shoot and this will become easier, the closer we get to the field.

Shooting in the field should be quite easy and this should be the quickest part of our filming. However, we shall have to take into account that some fen lands are private property so we will have to be careful and take good care that we aren't on someone else land.

Rough Shooting Schedule

Thursday 1st October - 13:15 First Junction Slot, Becky is free after 3 and may be a possible time to inform her when we will be shooting at the Junction and other shoots.

Friday 2nd October - 13:05 - Planning of animatic and story boarding animatic and finishing- we will get more of an idea of what we want each shot to look like so it will be easier for us to go out and shoot the following week.
There is a possibility of meeting up with Becky and Alie in the morning - may be a useful planning time.

Monday 5th October - 9:00 - more animatic work and feedback. This is not a good day to go shooting, as there is not enough time.

Tuesday 6th October - 12:20 - 14:35 slot possible shooting as the shooting site is close by, however we would only be able to have an hour to shoot.

Wednesday 7th October - 9:00 - Planning and possible shooting in the afternoon, this would be a good time if we can find out if Becky is free as college finishes at 12:30.

Thursday 8th October - 13:00 - Junction slot again, Becky is free in a small slot in the morning she is free and she is also free after 3 so this would also be an ideal place to shoot.

Friday 9th October - 13:00 - Long Road time to shoot - morning free so maybe more time to shoot else where with Becky.

(possible time to shoot on Saturday if we can organize everyone to get into town)

Monday 12th October - 9:00 Long Road time shooting and editing

Tuesday 13 October - 12:20 - 14:35 slot possible shooting but again we may only have an hour of shooting time.

Wednesday 14th October - editing and afternoon shooting if we can get Becky to be free.

Thursday 15th October - 13:00 - junction slot and again Becky should be free in the morning for a small slot and after 3.

Friday 16th October - morning shooting and afternoon possibly, just need find out when Becky is free.

(again possible Saturday shooting)

Researching Music Videos - Newton Faulkner

Here is a video for Newton Faulker's song "Badman". I thought that this would help us as he is an acoustic artist and this also gives us a feel to how we should work with our client, an acoustic artist. This video is mad in a interesting way, one simple effect and it keeps the video gripping all the way through.

Researching Music videos - Student Video - Hurtwood House

Here is a student music video from Hurtwood House. This video is made for the song Infra-red by Placebo. Even though this video doesn't have many similarities to the video which I intend to make for our client, I still think that it is a brilliantly edited video and everything that they have pieced together works really well together to make an effective video.
What works really well is all the close ups of the artist singing, his mouth and his eyes. This shows the personality and mood of the artist and the song perfectly. I also like the range of different close ups and angles of the instruments played and I intend to do something like that for the video which we are making. Even though Becky's video will not be cut as much as this, I will try to use a short similar to it.

Tuesday 29 September 2009

Researching Music videos - KT Tunstall

I decided to research KT Tunstall, as she is an acoustic artist and this would be useful as I am also doing a video for Becky Young, who is an acoustic artist.
I found a video that only stars her in the video and this was useful as I too plan to do this in the video for Becky. It shows the singer, playing all the instruments used in the song and the video cuts between shots of her playing each of them. As the tempo of the song gets fast, so does the cutting and this adds a good effect and keeps the song interesting. Which also keeps the video interesting is that they have added a simple effect, which was to add a mirror effect as the song moves through and gets a bit faster.

Here are a few pictures of video and also a link to the video, as the embed is disabled.

Feedback From Becky Young

We gave our pitch to Becky Young (our client) today and here is the feedback which we received from her.

She thought that our idea may become too boring throughout the video and that maybe adding something else or tweaking something may help. For example, Becky thought that we could add in some footage which will be shot at the Junction and this could be put in along side the other footage, maybe flick between the two. Becky also mentioned that making a variety of different shots for the journey would help too, as a lot of music videos use the journey idea, having different heights, angles and so on may help her viewers to be more interested.

Before pitching our ideas to Becky, myself and Alie had asked her on what she would want from the video and if she had any ideas for us. She came back to us and said that she would like a pitch from us and from there decide on what she wants from the video.
I think that we will have a lot of flexibility for this video but will have to make sure that we keeping Becky in mind throughout this project.

Rough Version of Pitch to Becky

Here is a rough version of our pitch, which we have pitched to Becky Young today. This includes our idea for her video and what we thought her video should be like.

'Alie: Our first idea and so far our only idea is to shoot you on your journey to a field. The field would be almost like your ‘gig’ but we would shoot you playing your guitar in the middle of the field towards the end of the video. The video would consist of a range of different shots, as we wanted to have a variety. This could include us shooting you in a car for part of the journey, which would be a close shot and then we would have a shot of you walking part of it which would be a long shot.
We have also considered including the Junction shoot into the video but we haven’t yet thought about how that would fit in but we are still going shoot it, just in case.

Philippa: To make this video a bit more interesting, we wanted to use some effect to add a different feel to the video. We came up with something simple which was to change the colours of footage. We want to keep you in black and white but change the colours of everything else around. To start of with, we weren’t too sure on how to do this but after getting advice we found that we could a do a few things make it easier. This could include making sure you are wearing black and white and then use final cut to change the colours, this will make it easier to bring out the colours around you.'

Planning - Places to Shoot for Commission

Today I went out to look for the place which we could shoot Becky's video. I was looking for a big field which I could have Becky sit in the middle of and then shoot the journey there. I took my phone with me and took some pictures of part of the journey and some of the actual field.
These are the pictures which I managed to get and they are helping me to get a better idea of what I want my video to look like and what I have to work with.

Coming up for an Idea for Becky's Video

When thinking about what I thought I wanted to do for the commission video, I came to the idea that I could make the video a journey. The video could start of with the artist starting her journey to the 'stage', I could have a few shots leading to this and then have her at her destination.

As I was thinking about this for the idea, I thought I would research into some music videos and see if I could find any which followed a journey through out.

By doing this I found these few videos but because the embed for disabled on youtube, I have pasted the link to video.

Tenacious D - Wonderboy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBI4T3uoKUw
(this video, I found out, was also directed by Spike Jonze)

Blue October - Hate Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-w5EghjrN0

HIM - Gone With The Sin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZtFLd_wNfI

These video all consist of some kind of journey, it may not be the one I am interested in but I decided to research them to see what they decided to do in the video.

Advise From Nick on Video I Found

During the session at Coleridge, I found a music video on youtube that I thought used a good effect and we would be interested in using. Me and Allie chose the video which we have blogged about before. which was HIM - gone with the sin.
I managed to get a lot of feedback and we got advised by the group and Nick on how we would go about doing it. They said that one way we could do it is by making our singer completely in black and white and then pick out the colours from the background that w shot. I thought that this would be the easiest, as spending a long time in photoshop or after effects, cutting around our singer or using green screen would be a lot more completed
I think that now we have found out that we could actual do this effect quite easily, we will definitely try it and test it out before we go shooting.

Researching Music Video's - HIM - Gone with the sin

This is the link to a song by HIM. The reason I looked at this video was because of colours effect and why the black and white works well with the rich and intense colours. e.g the pink sky or bright green grass.

I have also managed to get some screen grabs of the video, which show how the colours work within the video. I am hoping to do a similar effect as this, in my video and it should be just a matter of adjusting some colours and settings.

Goodwins Six Points

These are Andrew Goodwin's six points on how to analyse a music video.

"1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)."

Video's From Her MySpace Page

This first video is Becky singing her song "Sands of Beaches" live at a gig in Swavesey. The event held a few other unsigned bands and was a general village festival.
She sung both of these songs with an acoustic guitar and had no other instruments or band members.

Commission Artist

My best friend Becky has come to myself and Alie to commission us to make her a music video for a song called 'Time'. I have accepted her offer as she is unsigned artist and think that this would help her career and also it will be a good commission for us to complete.
She is an acoustic singer and her songs only consist of herself singing and playing the guitar. I thought that this would be a bit different because it will be a peaceful piece of music and not many people will have something to work with like this. It will be a challenge but a good commission.

Becky has also got her own MySpace site, which people can see her music and learn a little about her. The website displays pictures of her, a few of her songs, band influences and live videos.

Request from Becky

This is the letter which I have received from my friend Becky Young, our client for this project. She has sent me a request for making her a video for one of her songs and some short details of what she wants.

'Dear Philippa,

I am interested in making a video for one of my songs and as you are part of a media course, I was wondering if you would be interested in making it for me. The song which I want a video for is called 'Time' and it can be found on my MySpace page; http://www.myspace.com/beckyyoungcambridge.
I will need this video completed within three weeks and I would like a pitch from you of any ideas that you may have and we can discuss further details. I am also willing for you to work in a group, if you are needing more people to produce this video.

I hope that you are willing to make this video.

Your Sincerely,

Becky Young'

From receiving this email I then went to send an email to my class mate Alie who is also on my course. I did not think that I could complete this video by myself and I am good friends with Alie and as I have permission from becky - I wanted to ask Alie if she would be willing to work with me and for Becky. This is the email that I sent to Alie;

'Hi Alie,

She has mentioned that she is willing for me to work with other people and I thought that we could work together on this video for Becky.
Let me know if you are willing to work with me and I will let Becky know and we can get started.
